An enjoyable time was had at the Wells St site on saturday as we met with the members of MyPower. They are four young guys cycling around Australia with the aim of promoting awareness of issues of sustainability. We kicked back, ate some good food and talked about the future. We plan more Bar-B-Que Saturdays so stay tuned!

The Ecovillage

The Wells Street site comprised of 4.6ha of land is considered to be ideal for the development of an ecovillage project for the following reasons:

The site is located only 1 km from Geraldton’s Central Business District. This means that in line with an ecological ethos, residents of the village can access the city’s existing goods and services and employment without much environmental impact. That is they can walk or ride and even if they choose to drive the impact will be small.

At present the land is not very pleasant aesthetically, with degraded land and an impoverished vegetation profile (consisting of only regrowth and weeds). This means that human development on the site can be applied in a manner that improves, rather than deteriorates the ecological profile of the site. The local Geraldton community will be advantaged by the beauty of the village in contrast to what is there now.

The topography of the site is also good allowing for ocean and range views from the East and West ridges, with a dish forming a natural centre which seems to request a garden.
